Africa's Greatest Natural Amphitheatre

The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most spectacular natural wonders on earth — a massive collapsed supervolcano 19 kilometres wide and 600 metres deep, forming a natural enclosure for some 25,000 large animals. The crater floor encompasses 264 square kilometres of diverse habitats: open grassland, acacia woodland, freshwater streams, marshes and the soda lake Magadi fringed with flamingos. It is the only place in Africa where you are virtually guaranteed to see a black rhino in the wild. UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.

Best Time to Visit

☀️ Dry Season (Jun–Oct)

Excellent year-round but especially good Jun–Oct when animals concentrate around water. Best for rhino sightings and predator action.

🌧️ Green Season (Nov–May)

The crater is magnificent year-round. Green season brings lush vegetation, excellent birdlife and flamingos on the lake. Lower visitor numbers.

Frequently Asked Questions
They are different experiences. The crater offers an intensely concentrated wildlife experience in a smaller, dramatic setting. The Serengeti offers the vast open plains experience and the Great Migration. We recommend combining both for the ultimate Tanzania safari.
The Ngorongoro Crater has one of Africa's best remaining populations of critically endangered black rhinos — around 26 individuals. Your guide will know the best areas to find them. Sightings are not guaranteed but are more likely here than almost anywhere.
No overnight stays are permitted on the crater floor. You must leave the crater by 6pm. However, several exceptional lodges on the crater rim offer stunning views into this natural wonder.
