Hot Air Balloon Safaris in Serengeti

Drifting silently above the Serengeti at sunrise in a hot air balloon is one of Africa’s most extraordinary experiences — an hour of pure magic as the awakening savannah unfolds 100 metres beneath your feet, the horizon stretching to infinity in every direction.

How the Balloon Safari Works

You are collected from your camp before dawn — typically around 5:00am — and driven to the balloon launch site in the central Serengeti. As the sun begins to lighten the eastern horizon, your balloon is inflated and pre-flight safety checks are completed. You climb into the gondola with your fellow passengers (groups of 8–16 people) and lift off just as the sun crests the horizon — often the most spectacular moment of the entire flight.

The flight lasts approximately one hour and covers 15–25 kilometres depending on wind conditions. Your pilot has full control of altitude and can descend to within a few metres of the ground to follow migrating herds at close range, or soar to 300 metres for a panoramic view of the Serengeti. The flight concludes with a champagne bush breakfast served on crisp white linen in the open savannah.

What You’ll See from the Air

The aerial perspective transforms your understanding of the Serengeti’s scale. Wildebeest herds that appear as a distant cloud of dust from your game drive vehicle reveal themselves from above as a living river of thousands of animals flowing across the golden plains. You may see lions resting in acacia groves from directly above, hippos submerged in river pools glinting in the early light, and giraffe moving through woodland in their distinctive slow-motion gallop.
